The Scheme
Dedicated to providing serving and retired Police Officers, Police Staff, and their families with swift access to the best medical care, at not-for-profit rates
Established in 1989 by serving Northumbria Police Officers, the National Police Healthcare Scheme – formerly the Northern Police Healthcare Scheme – grew from being a local healthcare scheme for just one police force, into a regional police healthcare scheme, and is now a national scheme open to all within the British ‘Police Family’.
‘We are run by the police, for the police’
We have eight trustees, all serving Police officers from Northumbria, North Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire Police forces, and we run the scheme from the Northumbria Police Federation Office.
Our real, hands-on, lived experience and deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by Police Officers and Police Staff ensure that the scheme is tailored to meet the specific needs of our members.
A not-for-profit trust
Our members are our priority. Our commitment to ensuring that Police Officers, Police Staff, and their families have swift access to first-class medical treatment is at the heart of what we do.
We are a not-for-profit Trust, which means all membership subscriptions are used to support members.
Our Mission
At The National Police Healthcare Scheme, our mission is simple:
“To provide Serving and Retired Police Officers, Police Staff, and their families with swift access to the best medical care, at not-for-profit rates.”
We deliver that by:
Focus
Making our members our focus by providing them with support when they need it, and treating them with respect and dignity at all times
Partnerships
Partnering with the best private healthcare providers to ensure our members promptly receive excellent healthcare from top medical professionals
Affordability
Thanks to our not-for-profit approach, we seek to deliver the most affordable rates possible
Free membership to Police Treatment Centres
Unlike any other healthcare scheme, over and above our core provision of private healthcare, we provide FREE Police Treatment Centre membership to all serving Police Officers and Police Staff members, which allows them to access an additional wide array of physical and mental health support options, delivered at police-focused centres of excellence.
Exclusive access to luxury holiday homes
Plus, we provide members with exclusive use of the scheme’s luxury holiday homes at not-for-profit rates, as we want our members to have access to affordable rest and relaxation in ‘high-end’ and tranquil surroundings.
Private Healthcare for the ‘Police Family’
Our scheme covers private medical fees for serving and retired Police Officers and Police Staff, and their families.
First, we seek to ensure that those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our communities receive the medical support which they deserve. However, we know that our serving and retired Police Officers and Police Staff colleagues want their loved ones to benefit from the same level of support, so the scheme provides that – the spouses / partners and dependent children of scheme members can also join.
Membership includes generous allowances for consultations, diagnostic procedures, scans / tests, surgical procedures, inpatient and outpatient treatments, physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, and osteopathic treatment, up to £32,000 per member per per claim*
When they need it, we want our members to receive the right medical treatment, by the best medical practitioners, as swiftly as possible.
